Pre-writing skills are the abilities children use before and during handwriting. They support pencil control, letter formation, spacing, line use, speed, and endurance.

A child may know what a letter should look like but still have difficulty producing it because the hand tires quickly, the body is unstable, the eyes and hands are not coordinating efficiently, or the pencil grasp requires too much effort.

The Five Building Blocks of Handwriting

1. Hand and Finger Strength

Writing requires repeated, precise movements of the small muscles in the hand. Weakness may show up as hand fatigue, very light or very heavy pressure, frequent breaks, or difficulty with tasks such as buttoning, cutting, or opening containers.

2. A Functional Pencil Grasp

The goal is not a perfectly textbook grasp. The goal is a grasp that allows the child to write clearly, efficiently, and without pain. Dynamic tripod and quadrupod grasps are common functional patterns, but other grasps may also work well.

3. Visual-Motor Integration

Children use visual-motor skills to copy, align letters on lines, maintain size, and space words. Difficulty in this area may appear as inconsistent sizing, drifting off the line, or trouble copying from a board.

4. Bilateral Coordination and Hand Preference

Handwriting requires one hand to write and the other to stabilize the paper. Children who switch hands frequently or do not use the assisting hand may have difficulty developing an efficient pattern.

5. Core and Shoulder Stability

A stable trunk and shoulder allow the forearm, wrist, and fingers to move with greater control. Slouching, resting the head on the table, constantly changing position, or wrapping the feet around chair legs may indicate that the child is seeking more stability.

Hand and Finger Strengthening

1. Therapy Putty Treasure Hunt

Hide small objects in therapy putty and have your child locate them using their fingers. They can also roll, pinch, pull, and twist the putty to build hand strength.

2. Play Dough Work

Roll dough into balls and snakes, flatten it with the palms, pinch small pieces, or use child-safe tools and cookie cutters.

3. Clothespin Games

Clip clothespins around a container, match them to colors, or use them to pick up lightweight objects.

4. Tongs and Tweezers

Transfer pom-poms, beads, or small toys between containers. Progress from kitchen tongs to smaller child-safe tweezers.

5. Squeeze Bottle Art

Use small squeeze bottles filled with washable paint or water to create pictures and patterns.

6. Paper Crumpling and Tearing

Crumple scrap paper into tight balls using one hand, or tear paper into strips for a collage.

7. Spray Bottle Play

Use a spray bottle for watering plants, cleaning windows, or outdoor water play.

Short crayons naturally encourage finger placement because there is less room for a full-hand grasp.

9. Vertical Surface Drawing

Tape paper to a wall or use an easel. Drawing upright can support wrist positioning and shoulder stability.

Short pencils can encourage a more efficient grasp during brief writing activities.

11. Pencil Grips

A simple grip may provide a helpful finger-placement cue. Introduce it gradually and stop using it if it increases frustration or makes writing less comfortable.

12. Palm-to-Finger Separation

Place a small ball of putty or tissue in the palm and have the child hold it with the ring and little fingers while writing with the thumb, index, and middle fingers.

Visual-Motor Integration

Begin with wide, simple paths and progress toward narrower, more complex mazes.

Poor Pencil Grasp

What you may see: A fisted grasp, thumb wrapping over the fingers, fingers placed very close to the pencil tip, or visible tension.
