The Toddler Activity Box Got a Spring Refresh (And I'm So Excited to Share It)

If you have been following SkillSprouts OT for a while, you already know how much I love our Toddler Activity Box. It is one of my favorite things we make. Seeing parents tell me their 18-month-old spent 20 minutes with one activity, or that their 2-year-old asks for "the box" every morning — that is exactly why I do this work.
So when it was time to refresh the box for spring, I did not take it lightly. I went back to the basics: what are toddlers ages 18 months to 3 years actually working on right now? What do their hands need? What keeps them engaged long enough to build a real skill? And what makes a parent feel like they understand what is happening developmentally, not just that their kid is playing with a toy?
The new box is the answer to all of that.
What Changed
The spring refresh brought in a whole new lineup of activities. I kept the same philosophy — every single item has to earn its place by targeting real developmental skills — but the specific toys and tools are brand new.
Here is a look at what is inside:
Stacking and nesting play. A beautiful wooden rainbow stacker that works on problem solving, spatial reasoning, and hand-eye coordination all at once. Toddlers can stack it, nest it, sort it by color, and come back to it in completely new ways as they grow.
Pre-scissor skills. I included child safety scissors alongside activities that build the hand strength and control toddlers need before they are ever ready for real cutting. This is a skill most parents do not think about until preschool, but we can lay the groundwork so much earlier.
Cause and effect toys. A LeapFrog-style learning car that responds to what your toddler does. At this age, understanding that your actions create a result is a huge cognitive milestone, and it is endlessly motivating for little ones.
Sensory tools. A pop tube, pom poms, and a sensory light board give toddlers multiple ways to explore touch, pressure, and visual input. Sensory play is not just fun — it is how toddlers regulate their nervous systems and build the foundation for focus and attention.
Bilateral coordination activities. Using both hands together is a skill toddlers are actively developing, and several activities in this box specifically target it. It matters more than most people realize — bilateral coordination is foundational for everything from tying shoes to writing.
Early literacy. A simple board book is tucked in because language development and fine motor development go hand in hand. Reading together while little hands point, turn pages, and engage with the pictures is purposeful play at its best.
Stuffed animals for imaginative play. Two soft animal friends support early pretend play, which is how toddlers process the world around them and build emotional vocabulary.
And of course, there is a unique Little Sprout hidden inside every box. Every single one is different. My favorite part of unboxing day.
Why I Designed It This Way
As an occupational therapist, I see toddlers every week who are behind on fine motor skills, sensory processing, or bilateral coordination. And so often, the families I work with tell me the same thing: "I had no idea that was something I could work on at home."
You can. That is the whole point of this box.
The mini Growth Guide included in every box walks you through what each activity is building and why it matters. You do not need an OT degree to understand it. You just need to know what to look for, and I will tell you exactly that.
