Sensory processing is how your child's brain receives, organizes, and responds to information from the world around them. When it works smoothly, kids can focus, regulate their emotions, and engage with their environment. When it doesn't, everyday activities ā getting dressed, sitting at a table, being in a noisy classroom ā can feel genuinely overwhelming. Here's what you need to know.
If you've ever watched your child melt down over a sock seam, refuse to touch certain foods, or spin in circles for twenty minutes without stopping, you've witnessed sensory processing in action.
These moments can be confusing ā and exhausting ā for parents. Is this a behavior problem? A phase? Something more? As an occupational therapist, I hear these questions constantly. And the answer is almost always the same: your child isn't being difficult. Their nervous system is working differently.
Understanding sensory processing doesn't just explain a lot of what you're seeing ā it opens up a whole toolkit of strategies that can genuinely help.
What Is Sensory Processing?
Sensory processing is the neurological process by which the brain takes in information from the senses, organizes it, and produces a response. Think of it like a filter ā your child's brain is constantly receiving input from their eyes, ears, skin, muscles, and inner ear, and deciding what to pay attention to, what to tune out, and how to respond.
Most people are familiar with the five senses. But there are actually eight sensory systems that play a role in how children experience the world:
What we see ā light, color, movement, visual complexity.
What we hear ā volume, pitch, background noise, sudden sounds.
Smell ā often a strong trigger for children with sensory sensitivities.
Taste and oral sensation ā texture, temperature, flavor intensity.
Touch ā light touch, deep pressure, textures, temperature on the skin.
Movement and balance ā processed in the inner ear. Affects coordination and spatial awareness.
Body awareness ā input from muscles and joints about where the body is in space.
Internal body signals ā hunger, thirst, heartbeat, temperature, the need to use the bathroom.
Sensory processing differences can show up in any combination of these systems. That's why two children with sensory processing challenges can look completely different from each other.
What Is Sensory Processing Disorder?
Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is a condition in which the brain has difficulty receiving and responding to sensory information. It's not a behavior problem and it's not a parenting problem ā it's a neurological difference in how the brain filters and responds to input.
SPD exists on a spectrum and shows up differently in every child. Some children are hypersensitive (their nervous system over-responds to sensory input). Others are hyposensitive (their nervous system under-responds and seeks more input). Many children have a mix of both ā over-responsive in some systems, under-responsive in others.
SPD is not currently listed as a standalone diagnosis in the DSM-5, which can make it confusing when families are seeking evaluations or insurance coverage. However, sensory processing differences are widely recognized and treated by occupational therapists, and they frequently co-occur with ADHD, autism, anxiety, and developmental delays. Whether or not your child has a formal diagnosis, if sensory challenges are affecting their daily life and participation, OT can help.
Sensory Seeker vs. Sensory Avoider: What's the Difference?
The two most common sensory profiles you'll hear about are sensory seekers and sensory avoiders. Here's how they tend to look in real life:

Neither profile is better or worse ā they're just different nervous system responses. And again, many children fall somewhere in between, or are a seeker in one system and an avoider in another.
How Sensory Processing Affects Daily Life
This is where it gets practical for parents. Sensory processing challenges don't just show up as meltdowns ā they ripple through nearly every part of a child's day.
Getting dressed
The child who refuses certain fabrics, melts down over sock seams, or has to wear the same outfit every day isn't being stubborn. Tactile sensitivities make certain clothing genuinely uncomfortable ā sometimes painful. What feels fine to you may feel unbearable to them.
Eating and mealtimes
Picky eating is often sensory-driven. Texture, temperature, smell, and appearance all factor into whether a food feels acceptable. Children with oral sensory sensitivities aren't being difficult ā their brains are processing food input differently than neurotypical children.
School and learning
A busy classroom is an intense sensory environment ā fluorescent lights, background noise, the feeling of chairs, the smell of markers. For children with sensory processing challenges, staying regulated enough to learn requires significant effort. This can look like distraction, avoidance, or behavior issues that are actually sensory overload.
Transitions and routines
The interoceptive system (internal body awareness) plays a role in transitions too. Children who struggle to read internal cues may have difficulty shifting gears, recognizing hunger or tiredness, or managing the feeling of change.
Sleep
Sensory sensitivities ā particularly tactile (the feel of sheets, clothing, temperature) and auditory (nighttime sounds) ā can significantly disrupt a child's ability to fall asleep and stay asleep.
What Does Sensory Processing Have to Do with OT?
Occupational therapy is the primary profession that evaluates and treats sensory processing challenges. OTs are trained to assess how sensory processing differences affect a child's ability to participate in the daily activities that matter ā what we call "occupations" (play, learning, self-care, social participation).
A sensory-focused OT evaluation looks at how a child processes input across multiple sensory systems and identifies patterns ā what they're seeking, what they're avoiding, and how those patterns affect function. From there, the OT develops a personalized plan ā often called a sensory diet ā with specific strategies and activities to help the child's nervous system stay regulated throughout the day.
OT for sensory processing isn't about eliminating sensory needs ā it's about giving the child (and their family) tools to meet those needs in ways that support participation and wellbeing.

For sensory seekers (needs more input)
- Heavy work: Activities that give deep proprioceptive input ā carrying a backpack, pushing a laundry basket, animal walks (bear crawl, crab walk), wall push-ups, or rolling play dough with palms. These help the nervous system organize and calm.
- Fidget tools: A fidget at the desk gives seekers an appropriate outlet for sensory needs during seated tasks, which can dramatically improve focus.
- Movement breaks: Build structured movement into the day rather than trying to suppress it. Short, intense movement breaks (jumping jacks, bouncing on a therapy ball) before focused activities work especially well.
- Weighted items: Weighted lap pads or blankets provide calming proprioceptive input during meals, homework, or downtime.
For sensory avoiders (overwhelmed by input)
- Reduce visual clutter: A tidy, low-stimulation workspace helps children who are visually overwhelmed focus without shutting down.
- Noise management: Noise-canceling headphones or soft background music can reduce auditory overwhelm in busy environments.
- Clothing prep: Wash new clothes before wearing, cut tags, and let your child choose fabrics that feel comfortable. Seamless socks exist and are worth every penny.
- Slow, graded exposure: For tactile avoiders, gradual introduction to textures ā starting with dry, then damp, then wet materials in low-pressure play ā can desensitize over time.
- Predictable routines: Knowing what's coming next reduces the sensory and emotional load of transitions.
For all children
- A "sensory corner": A designated low-stimulation space (a bean bag in a quiet corner, a small tent) gives children a regulated place to go when they feel overwhelmed. Teach them to use it proactively, not just as a consequence.
- Sensory play: Sand, water, cloud dough, kinetic sand, and putty all provide rich sensory input in a controlled, play-based way. Even five minutes of sensory play before a challenging activity can help regulate the nervous system.
The goal isn't to eliminate your child's sensory needs ā it's to work with their nervous system, not against it. When families understand their child's sensory profile, so much of the daily friction starts to make sense. And once it makes sense, you can start solving it. That shift alone ā from "why is my child being so difficult?" to "oh, their nervous system needs X right now" ā changes everything.
When Should You Seek an OT Evaluation?
Consider reaching out to an occupational therapist if your child's sensory responses are:
- Causing significant distress ā meltdowns, shutdowns, or extreme avoidance regularly
- Interfering with daily routines (getting dressed, eating, sleeping, going to school)
- Affecting their ability to play, learn, or socialize with peers
- Escalating over time rather than improving
- Accompanied by other developmental concerns (motor delays, attention challenges, speech)

Frequently Asked Questions
Is sensory processing disorder the same as autism?
No ā they're distinct, though they frequently co-occur. Many children with autism have sensory processing differences, but not all children with sensory processing challenges are autistic. SPD can occur on its own or alongside autism, ADHD, anxiety, developmental delays, and other conditions.
My child is just picky ā how do I know if it's sensory?
Typical picky eating tends to be selective about flavor or preference. Sensory-driven food aversion often involves intense physical reactions to texture, temperature, or smell ā gagging, retching, crying, or complete refusal even when hungry. If your child's eating is significantly limiting their diet, affecting nutrition, or causing major mealtime distress, a feeding-focused OT evaluation is worth considering.
Can sensory processing challenges improve over time?
Yes ā with support, many children make meaningful progress. OT intervention, home sensory strategies, and simply growing up (the nervous system matures over time) all contribute. Some children need active support for years; others develop effective self-regulation strategies and the challenges fade significantly. Early intervention tends to have the best outcomes.
What is a sensory diet?
A sensory diet is a personalized schedule of sensory activities designed to help a child's nervous system stay regulated throughout the day. It's developed by an OT based on the child's specific sensory profile. It typically includes a mix of alerting activities (to help when the child is under-responsive) and calming activities (to help when they're overwhelmed), woven into the natural flow of the day.
